At its local, state and national levels, the League of Women Voters carefully studies the issues of the day to determine its priorities and develop its Public Policy Positions. Throughout the years, the League has engaged in studies on:
- Representative Government
- International Relations
- Natural Resources
- Social Policy
Beginning in the 1960s the League prepared the “Impact of Issues” documenting League Public Policy Positions. Every two years, the LWV-US revises the document based on member input and approval. This “Impact on Issues” document is designed to help League members use the National positions to act in their own communities.
It is important to understand that public policy positions at all levels require members to study as many sides of the issue as possible and then come to a consensus on it to form a position. Working through a grassroots process ensures that our advocacy is considered by a broad range of people across the social and political spectrum; that it is understood by members; and that it makes sense within the current political environment.
The Public Policy Positions Committee plays a pivotal role in shaping the policy direction of LWVAZ. This committee is tasked with planning and managing the League’s policy positions. Key responsibilities include:
-
Position Management: Develops a thorough understanding of LWVUS positions, stays updated on changes, and maintains familiarity with the positions of other state Leagues.
-
Advocacy Support: Offers guidance and support for advocacy activities, ensuring they align with established positions.
-
Study Oversight: Advises on state studies and concurrence processes to ensure they are conducted effectively and contribute to the League’s policy objectives.
-
Documentation and Communication: Keeps meticulous records of LWVAZ’s positions, updates website content accordingly, and responds to inquiries about the League’s policy stances.
-
Training and Education: Provides training and educational resources to League members to enhance their understanding and engagement with public policy issues.
This committee is essential for maintaining the integrity and efficacy of our policy-related activities, ensuring that our advocacy efforts are well-informed and strategically aligned with our mission to empower voters and defend democracy.
The League of Women Voters is committed to informed and active participation in government. This often involves conducting thorough studies on public policy issues to educate our members and formulate a strategic approach to influence outcomes effectively:
-
Policy Initiation: When a significant issue arises within a community that requires action but lacks a current League position at local, state, or national levels, or an existing position needs revision, the League undertakes a study.
-
Study Purpose: The primary aim of these studies is not only to educate our members about the issues but also to prepare for impactful action based on a well-understood and agreed-upon League stance.
-
Member Involvement: All members are encouraged to participate in this process. If you believe there is a need to propose a new or revised state public policy position, or if you are interested in contributing to a policy study, please reach out. Your involvement can help shape the League's advocacy efforts and ensure our actions are rooted in comprehensive understanding and member consensus.
